Karachi violence: Take indiscriminate action, SC orders IG Sindh

KARACHI: The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the Karachi violence suo moto case till Tuesday, Geo News reported. During Monday's proceedings, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry said the apex court wanted to wind up hearing of the case by Friday.
A five-member special bench of the SC comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, Justice Amer Hani Muslim and Justice Ghulam Rabbani is hearing the case at the Karachi Registry.

The CJ ordered IGP Sindh, Wajid Durrani to take indiscriminate action against criminals in all areas, adding that all accused go scot-free after confessions. The IG Sindh informed the court that no torture cells had been recovered during operations.

Earlier the lawyer for the Awami National Party (ANP) Iftikhar Gilani said the basis of target killing in the city was not ethnic and according to the constitution Urdu was the national language while gang war was not to blame for target killing in Karachi. He added that the statements of Zulfiqar Mirza could not be ignored.

According to the ANP lawyer, the Army could be called in under Article 147 so that powers would remain with the provincial government. To this the Chief Justice asked that why were the Police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies not being utilized. Iftikhar Gilani said the government had the capacity but lacked the will to deal with this issue.
