PM Gilani, Rehman Malik call Altaf Hussain

Efforts to woo the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) back into the government have gained full momentum as Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Interior Minister Rehman Malik called MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Express 24/7 reported on Sunday.

Gilani told Hussain that the government respects the MQM’s mandate and his party will continue pursuing the policy of reconciliation.

According to sources, former law minister Babar Awan is also expected to meet Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul-Ibad shortly, today.

Sources said the Interior Minister inquired about Hussain’s health and prayed for his speedy recovery.

Malik said certain elements are trying to mislead the nation through propaganda.

Hussain thanked President Asif Zardari and Gilani on inquiring about his health.

He said MQM will fight all conspiracies against democracy with other pro-democracy parties.

As reported earlier, the MQM had issued a statement saying Hussain became sick a week ago but “is now recovering”.

Also there were speculations regarding the MQM leader trying to leave for South Africa at London’s Heathrow Airport and was caught by the British authorities.

The British government, however, denied such speculations.

The MQM and Interior Minister had also denied reports of Hussain’s arrest.

Members of MQM’s coordination committee appealed the people to remain calm and not respond to rumours.
